Birdwatching in Mallorca

Strategically positioned between mainland Europe and Africa, Mallorca is a haven for bird life and Puerto Pollensa is without a doubt its nerve centre for bird watching. Cap Formentor, Boquer Valley and S'Albufera Wetlands are all within a ten minute drive.

Mallorca is the natural home to birds such as Black Vulture, Eleonora's Falcon,  Audouin's Gull, Moustached Warbler and Marmora's Warbler which are all very rare or difficult to see in the rest of Europe. Black Vultures, Bee-eaters, Marsh Harriers, Booted Eagles, Black Kites, Ospreys, Night Herons, Barn Owls, Scops Owls, Hoopoes can be spotted within within the vicinity of Hibiscus. Dave Bryce of Brough spotted almost 50 different species from the Hibiscus locality in May 2010. (See the attached list of Dave’s sightings).

Spring (Mar- May) and Autumn (Oct- Nov) are usually the best times for spotting the abundance of migrating birds who use Mallorca as a stopover on the way to & from Africa.

S'Albufera is one of the finest wetlands of all the Mediterranean with a perimeter of over 32km. More than 230 species have been recorded here, with a variety of wetland species and other birds, among them Little Egret, Purple and Night Herons, Little Bittern, Garganey, Osprey, Great Reed and Moustached Warblers, with the possibility of rarities such as Squacco Heron, Marsh Sandpiper, Slender-billed Gull, and Red-throated Pipit.  Black-winged Stilts, Kentish Plovers, Glossy Ibis, Spoonbills, Flamingos are all very possible.

Puerto Pollensa makes the perfect base as it includes the Boquer Valley and is close to the Albufuera marsh, the mountains in the north of the island, and the seacliffs of Formentor. Have a look at the Nature Reserve website, Check out the report from a previous guest at Hibiscus, or visit the Bird Forum.

Golf

Mallorca is a popular destination for golfers due to the climate and 19 courses to choose from! The jewel in the crown is the magnificent Alcanada Golf Club which for setting, condition and presentation, ranks as one of the finest golf courses in the world. Designed by Trent Jones and owned by Porsche, the view across the Bay of Alcudia from the 7th and 13th tees is simply breathtaking! It is situated some 8km from Hibiscus. The 9 hole Pollensa course is also nearby. The climate in Mallorca means golf is an all year round activity!

Watersports

The bay of Pollensa is an ideal place to practice all manner of water sports from sailing and wind surfing to snorkelling and scuba diving. Just wander down to the beach and see what's on offer. For the less energetic there are sailing yachts available for charter and a variety of boat tours.

The Caves at Campanet

For a fantastic family day out, the caves at Campanet are a must see. With 3,000m of underground caverns to explore, you can follow the winding path through stunning speleothems and amazing stallagmites, admiring the formations and the mini underground lakes. The chambers are known by such romantic names as Sala Romántica (the Romantic Chamber), Sala del Lago (the Lake Chamber), Castillo Encantado (Enchanted Castle), Sala de la Palmera (the Palm Tree Chamber), Cascada Sonora (Musical Waterfall) etc. It is a journey to capture the imagination of young and old, and a little cafe on site is good for a snack, some souvenirs, or simply to take in the beautiful panoramic views of the countryside. A great activity to do on a rainy day, or the caves make a cool retreat if it's too hot! Visit the website.
